DL & RC Validity Checker
Check whether your driving licence or vehicle registration certificate (RC) is still valid, how much time is left and when to renew. Enter a date, get an answer on this page. Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere.
Look for “Valid Till” on your licence. For a non-transport (private vehicle) licence, use the date printed for that category.
For a private car or two-wheeler. The date of registration is printed on the RC. If you bought the vehicle second-hand, use the original registration date, not the date of transfer.
Where to find the date on your DL and RC
Use the printed date, not a guess. This is the one that trips people up.

ILLUSTRATION
Sample layout with made-up dates, not a real licence. Your card may look different by state.
Smart card licence
Validity (NT) is for non-transport, private vehicles. Validity (TR) is for transport vehicles. Enter the NT date for your car or bike.
Older booklet licence
The validity is written inside the booklet next to the vehicle class. After a renewal, the latest entry shows the current date.
Vehicle RC
The date of registration is printed on the RC. Many RCs also print a registration validity date. If yours does, that date counts.
On your phone
The official mParivahan app and DigiLocker can show your licence and RC with the dates.
How long is a driving licence valid?
The date printed on your licence always decides. These are the general rules for a licence to drive a private (non-transport) vehicle.
Issued before age 30
Valid until you turn 40.
Issued between age 30 and 50
Valid for 10 years from issue.
Issued between age 50 and 55
Valid until you turn 60.
Issued after age 55
Valid for 5 years from issue.
Commercial (transport) licences
These are valid for a shorter period, usually a few years, and the exact date is printed on the licence. Check the date on your own card.
How long is a vehicle RC valid?
Registration works in blocks of years, not for life.
A private vehicle (car or two-wheeler) is registered for 15 years from the date of first registration. After that you can renew the RC, and each renewal is generally for 5 years.
Commercial and transport vehicles work differently. They also need a fitness certificate that is renewed on its own schedule, so an RC date alone does not tell you whether such a vehicle can be on the road.
Some regions also have their own age limits for older petrol and diesel vehicles, for example in Delhi and the NCR. These can be stricter than the 15 year rule, so check the local rules before you buy or keep an old vehicle. The checker above only follows the general 15 year rule.
Worked examples
Three quick cases to show how the rules play out. The dates on your own documents always decide.
Driving licence
Licence issued at age 25
Because the holder was under 30 at issue, the general rule ties the licence to age, not to a fixed number of years.
Valid until the 40th birthday
Driving licence
Renewed at age 42
A holder aged between 30 and 50 at issue or renewal generally gets a 10 year block, so the next date falls 10 years ahead.
Next renewal about 10 years later
Vehicle RC
Car registered in May 2012
A private car gets 15 years from the registration date, so the first period ends around May 2027. If renewed, the next block generally adds 5 years.
First period ends about May 2027
DL and RC at a glance
The two documents follow different rules, which is why they have separate tabs.
| Driving licence | Vehicle RC | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | The driver | The vehicle |
| How validity is counted | By the holder’s age at issue | 15 years from registration for a private vehicle |
| After it ends | Renew the licence | Renew the RC, generally in 5 year blocks |
| Renew on | Sarathi portal | Vahan portal |
| Extra checks | A medical certificate may be needed, depending on age and state | A fitness check or inspection is often needed for an older vehicle |
Renewal fee chart
The central fee amounts for a private (non-transport) licence and vehicle.
| What you pay | Amount | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Driving licence renewal | Rs 200 | Renewal within the 30 day grace period |
| Driving licence renewal after the grace period | Rs 300, plus an additional Rs 1,000 for each year or part of delay counted from the end of the grace period | Applications made after the 30 day grace period |
| RC renewal, motorcycle | Rs 1,000 | Vehicle 15 to 20 years old |
| RC renewal, light motor vehicle (car) | Rs 5,000 | Vehicle 15 to 20 years old |
| RC renewal, older than 20 years | Rs 2,000 (motorcycle), Rs 10,000 (light motor vehicle) | Fees raised by a notification dated 21 August 2025 |
| Late fee on an RC | Rs 300 a month or part of a month (motorcycle), Rs 500 (other non-transport vehicles) | Delay after the RC has expired |
| Fitness test for RC renewal | Charged separately | Amount varies by testing station and state |
These are the amounts under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules and their amendments. Fees get revised, and states and portals can add charges such as smart card or service fees, so the portal shows the exact amount before you pay.
What happens as time passes after expiry
This is the ladder our checker follows for a driving licence. The sooner you renew, the less it costs and the simpler it is.
-
Before expiryAny time before the date
Renew without penalty. The Motor Vehicles Act lets you apply up to one year before the expiry date, so start well before the last day.
-
Grace periodUp to 30 days after
Within 30 days after expiry, the renewal runs from the original expiry date and the late fee is not charged. Do not drive until the renewal is done.
-
Late30 days to 1 year after
The renewal runs from the date you renew, not from the old expiry, and the fee becomes Rs 300 plus Rs 1,000 for each year or part of delay counted from the end of the grace period. States may add their own charges.
-
Long gapMore than 1 year after
Under Section 15, you must pass the test of competence to drive before the licence is renewed, in addition to the late fee of Rs 300 plus Rs 1,000 for each year or part of delay. Confirm the process with your RTO.
For a vehicle RC, renew on the Vahan portal as soon as the first 15 years end. Late renewal may carry a fee, and an expired registration can lead to penalties or trouble at the time of sale. Our RC renewal guide covers the steps on Vahan, and our licence renewal guide covers the steps on Sarathi.
Fees and rules differ by state, so check the amount on the official portal or with your RTO before you pay.
Common mistakes to avoid
Check these before you rely on the result
- Using the issue date. Enter the expiry (validity) date for the licence, and the first registration date for the RC.
- Reading the wrong date. For a private vehicle, use the NT validity on a smart card licence, not the TR date.
- Using the transfer date for an RC. For a second-hand vehicle, the 15 years count from the original registration.
- Treating the grace period as permission to drive. It only helps you renew without a heavy penalty. Do not drive until the licence is renewed.
- Waiting for the last day. Portals get busy and documents can be rejected. Start well before the date.
- Paying an agent or an unknown website. Renewal is done only on the official government portals or at your RTO.
Good to know
Is this checker official?
No. It only does date math on what you enter, and it does not look up any record. Your official expiry date is on your licence and in the Sarathi and Vahan records.
Is there a grace period for a licence?
Yes, 30 days. If you apply within 30 days after expiry, the renewal runs from the old expiry date. After that, the renewal runs from the date you renew, and the fee becomes Rs 300 plus Rs 1,000 for each year or part of delay counted from the end of the grace period. States may add their own charges, so confirm on Sarathi. See our licence renewal guide for the steps.
How early can I apply for renewal?
For a driving licence, the Motor Vehicles Act lets you apply up to one year before expiry. For a private vehicle RC, the application is made not more than 60 days before expiry, as per Rule 52. Do not leave it for the last day.
Is my licence valid in other states?
Yes. A driving licence is valid across India, so you do not need a new one when you travel or move. You only need to update your address if you settle in another state.
Can an expired licence affect an insurance claim?
It can. If the driver does not hold a valid licence at the time of an accident, the insurer may question the claim. Read your policy terms, and keep your licence and RC valid.
My vehicle is more than 15 years old. Is it illegal?
Not necessarily. You can generally renew the RC for further 5 year blocks, but local rules for older vehicles vary, so check with your RTO.
Does this work for commercial vehicles?
Not fully. Commercial licences and transport vehicles have their own validity and a separate fitness certificate, so use the dates on your own documents.
Does the tool save my dates?
No. The calculation happens in your browser, and nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
